General Summary:
Under supervision and according to established standards, practices and guidelines, accurately administers the patient�s course of radiation treatment as directed by the radiation oncologist�s written prescription and approved treatment plan. Perform daily maintenance and quality assurance checks on treatment equipment. Monitors patients and equipment during treatments. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to all patients.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administers radiation therapy treatment accurately and safely. Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient-identification prior to treatment.
- Accurately sets up and prepares treatment room and equipment.
- Escorts patients to and from treatment room following procedures. Assists patients onto and off tables (from wheelchairs, stretchers) and positions them for treatment according to chart.
- Demonstrates respect for patient modesty and confidentiality.
- Clearly explains the simulation or treatment procedure to patients, and answers all questions.
- Monitors patient�s physical and emotional condition during treatment, reporting to appropriate personnel concerns regarding significant changes.
- Instructs patients concerning treatment and reinforces Radiation Oncologist�s advice to patients concerning treatment reactions and appropriate care.
- Adept at utilizing EMR. Scheduling treatments, image review, documenting Timeout, QA, and any patient issues in patient electronic record.
- Reviews daily schedule to confirm new starts, reduced (cone own) fields and that Chart QA has been performed. Reviews notes or alerts pertaining to individual patients.
- Understands the function of all equipment, accessories, treatment methods, policies, protocols & procedures and applies knowledge appropriately.
- Assists in the clinical instruction and evaluation of radiation therapy students.
- Works flexible shifts dependent on patient volume and departmental needs. Adapts to contingency plans, which are in response to variables which influence workload/schedule.
- Remains abreast of developments in the field of radiation therapy by attending continuing education programs, reading pertinent literature, attending in-service instructions and participating and professional organizations.
- Demonstrates cooperation and responsiveness to all staff members. Models appropriate professional behavior, such as: courtesy, respect, constructive assertiveness, effective listening.
Qualifications:Knowledge, Experience and other Job Requirements:
- Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate�s Degree in radiation therapy technology.
- Current Ma License as a radiation therapist RT(T) required.
- ARRT registered or registry-eligible Required.
- One or two years of experience.
Working Conditions:
- Constant walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients in difficult positions; pushing and or lifting of moderately heavy equipment. Concentrated attention required during testing and treatment.
