Positions are based in the Emergency Department, for the Emergency Medicine Service line, located at the Pittsburgh VAMC-University Drive Campus and in the Patient Care Service line, located at the Pittsburgh VAMC, Aspinwall Campus, and are under the supervision of a registered nurse. Duties of these positions are: Provides direct observations for patients requiring suicidal precautions, restraint, seclusion and elopement risk. Provides social interaction and diversion to the assigned patient by reading to the patient, participating in social conversation, and accompanying the patient to other hospital locations, if needed. Gently eases patients to the ground if in danger of falling & assist patients to remain in bed as directed by registered nursing staff. Prevent assigned patients from removing IV catheters, drainage tubes, foley catheters, feeding tubes, N/G tubes, dressings, and oxygen by redirecting the patient and or removal of the hands from the equipment. All incidents are to be reported to the registered nursing staff. Follows established safety practices and reports to the Supervisor as promptly as possible unsafe or broken equipment, unsafe practices or occupational illness or injury that is sustained. Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations, and work practices as required. Provides observation of patients while patients travel to and from clinical units, clinics, and ancillary departments of the medical center and other off-station appointments. Acts as a liaison between the nursing staff and families in the waiting room & acts as a greeter to visitors and families and answers the telephone when needed. Provides visitor identification tags to visitors in the Emergency Department. Performs other related duties as assigned. Performs simple personal nursing care tasks in a hospital ward for patients who are not critically ill: - Makes patient beds - Stocks linens and supply shelves - Collects and bags soiled linen for the laundry. - Places clean linen in proper storage area. - Fills water pitchers and gives ice water to patients. - Passes food trays and/or feeds patients, when permitted to do so. - Picks up medications or dietary items and delivers them to appropriate unit(s). - Assist nursing staff in turning patients - Assist patient in the washing of hands and oral care as directed by registered nursing staff. - Escort patients to and from recreational activities on unit. - Escort patients to and from clinic appointments as assigned. Performs simple personal nursing care tasks in a hospital emergency department: Makes patient litters. Stocks treatment rooms, carts, and shelves with medical supplies, checking for expiration dates. Completes monthly room/cart/shelving cleaning assignment. Collects soiled linen bags and transports to Emergency Department soiled utility room. Places clean linen in proper storage areas. Stocks blanket warmer. Provides beverages and food and /or feeds patients, when permitted to do so, only under the direction of assigned registered nurse. Picks up any non-controlled medications from pharmacy. Assists nursing staff in turning and re-positioning patients.
