The Social Worker functions as a Substance Use and Mental Health Disorder Specialist with a multidisciplinary team on the Substance Abuse and Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs (SARRTP/PRRTP) at the VA Nebraska Western Iowa -Omaha VAMC. The Social Worker will function independently to assess, evaluate and treat veterans with addictions and mental health disorders. The incumbent is responsible for completing the following duties/responsibilities: Conducts in depth biopsychosocial assessments upon admission to the RRTPs. Identifies strengths, needs, abilities and preferences that factor into the development of a treatment plan. Actively participants in the treatment planning process with other disciplines and will assist with such. May make recommendations and suggestions for any veteran in RRTP. Develops individual treatment plans for a set case load in the residential program. Demonstrates competence in ability to obtain and interpret information related to substance use disorders and mental illnesses, as well as biological and sociocultural dimensions influencing these. Conducts short-term, in-depth therapeutic counseling sessions in accordance with specific program guidelines. Serves as a therapist/counselor for group an individual therapy sessions. They will observe behavior and document interactions appropriately. Group and individual interactions in the therapy setting will be used to drive changes in the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Develops recovery based group and individual therapeutic strategies to maximize treatment outcomes. Implements a wide range of outpatient and residential treatment modalities for veterans and their families. Conducts lectures and make educational presentations to veterans related to various aspects of substance use and dependence. Makes presentations to community organizations, therapeutic groups, special interest groups and students on substance use and dependence related topics as needed. Provides consultation/education to medical residents/students on social work practice and VA policy and procedure.
