The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System has a full-time opportunity in Geriatrics and Extended Care for a Physician assigned to the Section of Extended Care, which includes opportunities working in the new 60-bed Community Living Center, outpatient Geriatric clinic and inpatient Geriatric consults service. The position offers a unique opportunity to be part of the expanding and growing programs of Geriatrics and Extended Care as the new health care campus of Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System is completed. The incumbent will be directly accountable to the Section Chief of Extended Care in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service.
The incumbent is responsible for the application of specialized, advance clinical health care knowledgeand skills in the care of older adults, working in a collaborative team-based model. He/she must execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to the management of complex client care. The incumbent must be able to work collaboratively with other health care disciplines, including nursing, rehabilitation, mental health, social work, dieticians, and pharmacists.
As a Physician (Geriatrics and Extended Care), responsibility includes providing comprehensive healthcare to residents in the New Orleans-based Community Living Center, outpatient and inpatient consultative settings. The patient population served includes persons with a spectrum of clinical illnesses and spectrum of needs. Privileges include admission, evaluation, diagnosis, and management of predominantly older veterans with complex medical and psychosocial concerns. Physicians with these privileges have the highest level of competence in Geriatric Medicine on a par with the considered appropriate for a subspecialist. They are qualified to act as primary care providers and as consultants and should, in turn, request consultation from within or from outside the medical center whenever needed. Experience taking care of a predominantly older adult population is preferred. Opportunities for academic appointments with local academic affiliates are also available. The incumbent may also provide medical supervision to residents and fellows with academic affiliates. On-call responsibilities will be proportionally shared. The successful incumbent will have a record of accomplishments clinically, academically, and/or administratively. Salary considers qualifications and level of expertise.
TOUR OF DUTY: Monday-Friday & Weekends, Days - 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Other Shifts, as needed (Rotating Shifts). (40 hour work week/80 hour two week pay period).

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Physicians with a minimum of two (2) years in related clinical geriatric careis preferred. It is also preferred that the candidate be board certified or board eligible in Geriatrics. The incumbentwill be directly accountable to the Section Chief of Extended Care in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service.
The incumbent will take part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure), and quality assurance activities. The highest degree of good judgment, ethical behavior and professional demeanor is required at all times in the incumbent's contacts with patients, his peers and other employees.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organization (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.
